Scribblenauts
So I've got Scribblenauts now and I'm trying to find crazy stuff to summon. So far, I've found a few gems.
- Ceiling cat
- Long cat
- Particle accelerator creates black holes
- Heaven and hell are the same with different color and small accents
Thing I was disappointed not to find:
- There is Ra, but not Thor or Odin! No Buddha either.
- No Flying Spagetti Monster! Produces generic monster.
What else should I try? Scribblenauts tends to allow only objects, not proper nouns or suggestive material. I try anything though and report the results.
I've finished the game and I'll give you guys my full review.
First, the good things about Scribblenauts. The best part is solving puzzles your way. There is not much that cannot be solved with wings, Zeus, and a fishing pole. When those fail, get a chain and a fighter jet.
This game is more challenging than you would expect also. Each level has a par of objects one can create. Completing a level and remaining under par is the point. In one level, you have to save two soldiers, hanging from rope, and return them to a boat. In between them and the boat is a wall that forces you underwater, mines, an enemy sub, an enemy battleship, and a shark. For this, you have a par of five. So how do you do it? Get rid of the enemies and mines with Zeus. Use a match to ignite the ropes and get both soldiers down into the water. Use a rebreather and chain to tow the allies underwater to the boat. This is one solution. If your crafty, you can salvage the ropes they were hanging from and do it in one less.
I also love the lighthearted and humorous atmosphere of this game. Whether you are helping zombies infect new victims or parachuting to a starite while Ceiling cat watches, you have to notice it.
Now for the things that make this game frustrating. The controls for moving Maxwell are slippery. You use the stylus to tap were you want him to be. It is not uncommon that you'll be around lava and Maxwell loves to jump on in when you want him to go near the edge. It also has a the very annoying habit of having Maxwell try to follow the stylus when you are trying to pick something up. Many times, I would be trying to get a chain to move and Maxwell comes running into enemies, explosives, or lava pits.
Things have a way of spazzing out from time to time. There is a level with an alien frozen in a ice cube and your mission is to get him and a scientist to a truck. In between is a bottomless pit. So the first thing I try is using a large steel gate to bridge the gap and a chain to pull the ice cube down. Soon as cube hit the gate, the gate jumps and the cube falls in the pit, followed shortly by Maxwell. I solved this later with the combination of a roc, chain, and handcuffs.
A couple of the levels are not exactly clear on what is expected, especially puzzle 8-11. This level includes a Back to the Future reference. I'm not much of a buff myself. The level starts with a scientist on a roof a building. Across from the building is a tree. These are connected with a power line. The hint text reads Timing is everything. Get the charge to 88. I had no idea what it wanted. After a series of failures, I did some research and learned I had to get a car to hit the power line. I used a monster truck because it was tall enough.
Another example is a level in which you must do two things to celebrate a wedding. Seems easy right? Should be. Sometimes things take and other times they don't. The fool proof way is first give the bride a bouquet and then make a wedding cake. Put the wedding cake where the guests cannot devour it. It doesn't count if the guests eat the cake. The happy couple want it vacuum sealed for posterity.
Even with these problems, I recommend Scribblenauts. It is one of the fews games that has made me lose track of time. :)
